My water pump has failed and I'm considering replacing it myself but I'm
unsure whether it needs a special coolant bleeding process afterwards to
make sure there are no airlocks. I heard for some cars (Ford Sierras) this
is essential to avoid overheating hassles but is this necc for a MB? The
'special process' I believe amounts to briefly undoing various bleed valves
round the engine and heater to clear air pockets.

Thanks

There is no problem with MB engines. They all have a coolant expansion
system now. The last engine with such a problem may have beenin
W114/115's in the seventies.

Thanks Roland,

Just out of interest why do MB cars use Torx hexagonal heads (eg water pump
bolts) and also Torx screw heads (eg MAF sensor) instead of hex heads and
standard allen screws?

Why to make it more interesting to work on.
Just about everyone has a set of sockets. Not
everyone has a set of Torx. Could be worse.
BMW X5 uses a 27mm socket for the oil filter.
Go figure. Like who has that large of a one?
