Discussion:
Listening to audio (e.g., podcasts and music) in a Mercedes GLK350 SUV?

Hello.

Is there a way to hook up an iPhone 4S (iOS 5) to a few years old
Mercedes GLK350 SUV with its basic package? It can do mobile iPhone 4S'
phone through its BlueTooth. Is it possible to do the same for its audio
like podcasts and music? There are no audio cable hookups like for
headphones as well. Or does one have to buy an addon for this to work?

Thank you in advance. :)

does it support the a2dp bluetooth profile?

looks like it does:

<http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/vehicles/model/class-GLK/model-GLK350W2>
Bluetooth audio streaming makes it even easier to enjoy your digital
music player. It allows you to connect your Bluetooth-equipped iPod®
or other MP3 player wirelessly to your vehicle's audio system for
convenient, cable-free playback.

pair it then send the audio to it via the airplay icon.

My client and I will check that later, but it probably doesn't exist due
to this e-mail re(sponse/ply) from Mercedes' web site:

Dear Mr. Dude,

Thank you for your email.

We invite you to explore our mobile website for information on
compatible
phones for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.  For your convenience, we have
included
a direct link below.  Please note however that Bluetooth audio
streaming
(for media) was not available prior to model year 2013 GLK vehicles.

We hope you find this information helpful..." :(

If that is true and profile does not exist, then are there any addons to
use with an old Apple iPhone 4S? :)

the 4s isn't old. it was the latest and greatest less than 1 year ago.

if "audio streaming (for media) was not available prior to model year
2013" and the vehicle in question is a few years old, then that's your
answer.

it's still worth a try just in case he's mistaken, but based on what he
said, it's not going to work.

there are bluetooth speakers that could be installed.

I can't speak for the GLK, but both my 2008 E350 and my 2011 E350 were
system compatible for IPod & iPhone via 30-pin connecter in the glove
box and BT. The BT setup and function with the 2011 E350 was a big
improvement over the 2008. I have a 160GB iPod Classic in the glove box
and my iPhone 4S connects to the car system seamlessly via BT.

Hi again.

http://discussions.apple.com/message/22380055 and
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4437 mentioned Airplay, but my client and
I were unable to find AirPlay names in both SUV and iPhone 4S (now using
the latest iOS 6 firmware). Where are they at/located?

Thank you in advance. :)

Some apps have airplay built into them. If an app doesn't have airplay
built into it, double tap the Home button then swipe the recent-apps bar to
the right twice. You should then see a volume slider, and to its right, the
airplay button.

What do you mean by SUV in this context?

Uhh, which audio app has Airplay for music, podcasts, etc. in iPhone 4S'
iOS 6 to go to SUV through Bluetooth?

the built in music app supports airplay, plus quite a few third party
apps.

you still need an a2dp bluetooth profile no matter what you do.

Ah. So, SUV needs to show A2DP Bluetooth Profile first which we didn't
see unless we missed it. We only saw Bluetooth Profile for phones. :(
yep, and it should 'just work' if it does, automatically playing on the
bluetooth device. no need to fuss with airplay. that's how it works
with my bluetooth headset.

if it doesn't have a2dp, then it won't work. your only option would be
to get bluetooth speakers that support a2dp and mount them somewhere in
the vehicle, perhaps wired into the audio system if possible.

If I'm not mistaken, Airplay goes through WiFi, not through Bluetooth.
Connecting to the SUV via Blootooth is essentially the same as connecting
to a headphone set via Blootooth.

it does, but a paired bluetooth headset shows up in the airplay menu,
even though it's not really using airplay.
